Mother’s Day Gift & Activity Ideas!

Posted: 06 May 2020 02:05 PM PDT

Mother's Day is almost here and normally this time of year we're buying bouquets of flowers, picking out cards, making brunch reservations – all these gestures and more to show our dear moms just how special they are to us.

But let's face it, with stay-at-home orders and many places still closed, it is particularly challenging to plan something special for mom.

Our some of the awesome Neroli moms have put together this list of activity and gift ideas to help make Mother's Day special while stuck at home.

Treat Mom To A Fun Day

Show mom you care with these cute and heartfelt ways to spend time with her, whether you are near or far.

Curbside Brunch

There are a ton of amazing area restaurants offering Mother's Day brunch curbside. Not only does it make it special for mom, but it helps local restaurants that need the extra business. This works great not just for your wife or significant other, but also if your mother lives in town. Check out this great listing of restaurants offering Mother's Day brunch.

Virtual Afternoon Tea Party

Call up her girlfriends, or mom and sisters and plan a Zoom meeting. Make it a happy hour by gifting her favorite wine or cocktail mix.

If alcohol isn't her thing, set up an afternoon tea party with friends and make her favorite tea and cookies.

Movie Night

Plan a movie night, mom's choice and either pick up some curbside carry out or make movie snacks for dinner. Homemade nachos, popcorn, and pretzel bites along with some veggies and dip make for an easy dinner. It may not be the heathiest choice, but it's a special occasion. And if you want to plan a movie night for your mother who doesn't live with you, there are a ton of great apps including Netflix Party where you can watch, talk, chat while watching the same movie together.

Go For A Hike

Many of the state parks are open again, so if the weather is nice, gather up the children and go hiking for a few hours. This can be with or without mom. We have all had a lot of quality time together and a house all to herself might be the best present of all. Keep in mind you will need Wisconsin State Park Pass in order to visit a state park. Passes can be obtained here.

Spa Day

Bring the spa experience home! One of the best parts of a massage or facial is the amazing products and aromas.

Kid’s Activities: Make Mom A Gift

Here are a few ways to create a few homemade gifts that mom will love, made by her favorite people: her kiddos.

Creative Sidewalk Greeting

This one is a fun idea for all ages. Try driveway painting with homemade chalk. This social media craft trend is the perfect way to give mom a “card” from a distance!

Items You’ll Need:

  • Corn starch
  • Water
  • Food coloring

Directions

Mix 2 tablespoons corn starch with 4 tablespoons cold water and then add the food coloring until you reach your desired color.

Repeat the steps for as many colors as you want to use.  You can put them in individual bowls or use a muffin tin and have all of your colors in one pan. Your kids will think you are so cool!

Aveda Lavender Slime

This will keep you and your kids relaxed and entertained. Brookfield Hair Designer, ShanaMarie’s daughter created this recipe. She said, "It made her hands feel SO smooth.” Finally, a recipe for 'clean' slime! It's always the most fun for the kiddos to mix, create and then of course, repeat!

Items You’ll Need:

  • 4 Tbsp of baking soda
  • 4 Tbsp ANY favorite soap—it can be hand soap, shampoo or even dish soap
  • 2 Tbsp Aveda Hand Relief
  • 6-8 drops of essential oil (we like lavender)

Directions

Use a large bowl or mason jars to mix together all of the ingredients. It will turn into a creamy paste! Cover it with a lid or foil to protect it from drying out. My kids love it and so do I!

DIY Lip Balm: Juicy Lips

ShanaMarie’s daughter also created this recipe, too. It’s so fun to make and it really does taste so juicy!

Items You’ll Need:

  • 3-4 Tbsp coconut oil
  • Non-toxic and clean crayon
  • Lime
  • Container for lip balm

Directions

In a saucepan melt 3-4 Tbsp coconut oil. *Optional— to add color, peel the wrapper off of your 'favorite' color crayon or whatever color you'd like your balm to be. If no crayon color is desired, it will dry white.

Make sure oil (and crayon) is melted to liquid, then squeeze two lime wedges in liquid. Gently, mix hot oil mixture and place in desired vessel and place into the refrigerator.

You can use anything to contain a liquid in until it hardens in the fridge. My girls like to be 'fancy' so they used a plastic teacup.

An hour later you have a perfectly set chapstick that is equally as moisturizing as it is tasty for dry, quarantined lips. ENJOY!

(Idea by Brookfield Hair Designer, ShanaMarie – and her 8 year old daughter!)

This year we might not be able to be physically close to our mothers on Mother's Day, but hopefully this list provided some useful ideas for how you can still show your mom just how much she means to you.
