Articles Of The Week May 17, 2020

Posted: 16 May 2020 06:04 PM PDT

It’s a pretty confusing time when we are all looking at possibly re-opening our clinics. What I like about this post is how it is advocating and lobbying for Massage Therapists and their safety.

“An Open Letter about Re-Opening — to Massage Therapy Employers” – Tracy Walton

We would all be better therapists if we could understand more about the patient experience and what they are dealing with. Which is why articles like this are important for us to read. To truly understand the patient perspective with pain.

“My Time At The Mayo Clinic Pain Rehabilitation Center” – Tom Bowen

Unfortunately, the longer someone experiences pain, the less valid standard MSK assessments and treatments become. This is why we need to start looking at things like education, adopting new narratives, and looking at principles over modalities to help chronic pain patients.

“Rehabilitation For The Persistent Pain Patient” – Eric Purves

There has long been a need for quality research around massage therapy as a profession. Here is a great resource of some systematic reviews that show massage therapy has a growing body of evidence supporting its effectiveness in reducing pain and improving health-related quality of life in a variety of health conditions and rehabilitation.

“Systematic Reviews Of Massage Therapy” – Richard Lebert

As we move forward to our clinics opening, there are many recommendations about wearing masks. While this may be important from a safety standpoint, we also have to take into account how this will affect our non-verbal communication and how it can affect our patients.

“The Challenge Of Surgical Masks For Physiotherapists” – Noi Group

Hot tub shopping: Get the right tub for you instead of the right now tub

Posted: 15 May 2020 09:24 PM PDT

May 15, 2020 – This has been the most interesting time of my life in the hot tub industry. When we were all mandated to stay at home, I didn't know what that would hold for our business.

Well, extended time at home has made everyone realize how incredibly important a hot tub as a safe retreat can be. Our time on the phone and online with customers looking for the right hot tub for them has been non-stop. Often, I'm at home talking with folks at 8:30 at night to help find the perfect hot tub to help ease the monotony of being at home and giving everyone a way to enhance their health and well-being.

A couple of my friends over the past month asked me about inflatable hot tubs. Inflatable hot tubs. I would think anyone thinking logically would realize that an inflatable hot tub is not an answer that would be smart for any long-term use. I certainly re-directed them on that idea!

We've had this incredibly fortunate problem of selling a lot of Hot Spring & Freeflow Spas over the past eight weeks. Since we can't get many new hot tubs shipped to us right now, we've got nearly three dozen customers who have bought tubs from us waiting for the one they really want to arrive. Why? Because these people realize that, while getting a hot tub right now would be terrific, getting the right tub is far more important!

If you're one of those people out there who has realized you should have a hot tub, congratulations! You're not only going to love it right now; you're going to love it for years to come—if it's the right tub. DO NOT settle for a tub because it's cheaper or it happens to be something that can be delivered right now if it's not the best hot tub for you. Hot tubs are an investment, and work needs to be done in order to get them installed and set up. Make sure you spend your money wisely.

Are you one of those who has decided it's time to find the right tub for you? If you're in our service area here in the Northwest, take a look at the entire collection of Hot Spring & Freeflow Spas on our website. Not only am I confident you'll love what you find, I'm confident that when you get a tub from Olympic it will be the right tub for you!

A Day at the Spa Promotes Emotional Well-being

Posted: 15 May 2020 11:55 AM PDT

Many people view a trip to the spa as pure luxury, but nothing could be further from the truth. Of course, spa treatments are an amazingly luxurious experience, but they have benefits far beyond pampering. One of the greatest benefits is that of promoting emotional well-being.

Life is stressful, and stress whether good or bad can have a negative effect on mental health. Stress can cause anxiety, contribute to a depressed mood, and make you irritable. This can affect your relationships at work and in your personal life. Left unchecked, excessive stress levels can even harm your health and progress to physical symptoms.

Spa treatments focus on stress relief and relaxation. They relax your body and clear your mind to help you release the tensions of daily life. The results are better sleep, which further aids in stress reduction, a calm and pleasant mood, increased self-confidence, reduced anxiety, and a renewed spirit.

So a day at the spa is not merely a luxury. It is an important element of self-care that promotes emotional well-being that will carry over into every aspect of your life. When your mind and thoughts are clear of tension and stress you will be able to think more clearly and be more productive at work. You will be better able to meet any challenges that come up, and since you are less irritable your personal relationships will improve. All are key components of emotional health.

As soon as we can reopen, the staff here at DuBunnè Spa Club & Massage Centre are looking forward to helping you to improve your emotional well-being with a soothing and relaxing spa package. We know you are looking forward to it too. When we do open, give us a call at 310.326.9062 to book an appointment. You can find us at 23725 Arlington Avenue in Torrance. Download our free mobile app from iTunes or Google Play to manage appointments on the go.

Florida is not legally open for massage!

Posted: 15 May 2020 11:02 AM PDT

Gov. DeSantis stated we are in full phase 1. This means gyms are open starting Monday and restaurants can operate at 50% capacity. Massage/Spas should not be open for those services. I've gotten clarification from Orange County, Seminole County and the Florida Massage Board. As it stands, a place I work plans on opening. I wont be there and I'll let them know why in many words.

Any LMTs here from Texas?

Posted: 15 May 2020 11:40 PM PDT

Phase 2 is suppose to open up on Monday, May 18th & it's been crickets. Nothing from the governor, or the Tdlr website as far as an update to let us know if we WILL reopen. I'm an employee at a massage establishment, my boss is prepared to open on May 18th, but so far there have been no updates. I know for phase 1 gov. Abott gave a conference a few days before phase 1 started. So, I'm surprised that it's been real quiet regarding phase 2.

Just checking in to know if anyone knows where we stand as far May 18th being the opening date.

I don’t know how I’m supposed to do fascial work with gloves& Oregon stage 1 feels

Posted: 15 May 2020 02:00 PM PDT

First of all - yes I'm gonna wear gloves.

But I legit have no fucking clue what I'm going to do. Just using one glove when I've had a cut on my hand fucked up my ability to work with fascia, I've built my entire practice around fascial work, it's what people see me for and I'm at a loss.

Is anyone else in my situation? Anyone have tips for how to do fascial work with gloves?

Second thing - any other LMTs in Oregon feeling like us going back in phase 1 is a really stupid risk? We should be in phase 2 like the rest of the west coast. Can we do something to push us to phase 2? High contact jobs should not be fucking first.

Thanks y'all!

Embarrassed To Get a Massage Again Due To An Incident

Posted: 15 May 2020 08:33 AM PDT

So, last year I finally decided to try out a massage and really enjoyed it after never thinking I would. I've been going to different LMTs during the time to get a different idea of who I prefer most as I'm new to it.

Anyway, in early March pre shutdown, I booked an appointment with a really well reviewed LMT on Thumbtack.

The massage was going well and she really had a nice technique, although she did have me start face up which was new to me, it didn't bother me. Unlike other LMTs, she started working really low on my stomach, like well below my belly button. When she moved to my pelvic region, her hand accidentally touched my genitals which unfortunately caused me to have a "reaction." This was probably the 7th massage I've had and the first time this happened to me.

Well, when she moved to my side and when she adjusted the sheet, "it" popped out in to the open. She quickly adjusted the sheet and I apologized and that seemed like the end of it. I was able to regain control and the massage resumed normally after that.

When I got home, I received a thumbtack message from her saying that due to my "obvious arousal" that she wouldn't be accepting appointments from me any longer.

I couldn't believe it, I felt so mortified. I really didn't feel like it was my fault as I know it's normal for men to react and I felt it was her fault for not paying attention to what she was touching and poor draping techniques.

This was the third LMT I've seen and I didn't have issues with the other two, so I'll likely just go back to one of them, but now the whole experience has me second guessing myself.

Is she acting really unreasonable?

Asian massage tool

Posted: 15 May 2020 05:55 PM PDT

Hi everyone A long time ago I had a tool which was great for beating out knots, I called it a boinger.

It was a hollow rubber ball on a metal stalk with a wooden handle. Basically you would bounce the ball against the knot in your, or your friends muscle, since it was on the metal stalk it would bounce by just a flick of the wrist. It's very effective.

I could usually find it in Asian stores but with being on the road I'll have to find it online but I don't know what it is called and Google shows me everything but. I was hoping you good people could help me. Thank you in advance.

Buying equipment for reopening

Posted: 15 May 2020 09:28 AM PDT

Where are you all finding your supplies. Trying to order from massage warehouse and lots of things are back ordered. I'm in NYS, upstate, worried I won't have what I need by the time we are allowed to open.

I was able to buy a Hepa filter air purifier from amazon and a reusable mask, several new top blankets from amazon.

But I still need. - disinfectant sprays (ordered, but back ordered) - hand sanitizer - moisture barrier for table and face cradle (ordered but back ordered) - disposable masks

Also if you have any recommendations on places to buy cheap scrubs? Are we thinking it's best to change between each client?

If there is anything I didn't mention that you also think I should consider, lemme know! - I didn't say gloves.. because I don't really ever work on faces and if I'm washing my hands constantly, is it truly necessary?

Wishing you all the best!

Anybody here from Washington State?

Posted: 15 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I don't know when I'm allowed to start seeing my regular clients again. I'm afraid that if I start too soon my insurance will not cover me if someone tries to sue me. I spend hours on the internet trying to find some shred of information so that I can tell my clients when I can start booking them, but always come up empty. My county has had only 2 cases of covid and zero deaths. We were approved to move into Phase 2. Phase 2 personal services are listed as hair stylists, estheticians, tattoo artists, ECT... And below that it says "Personal services" does not include those regulated by Washington's Department of Health, such as massage therapy, acupuncture, physical therapy, and chiropractic. So I call the DOH directly and they had no answer for me on when I could start. They literally only had the information that I had access to myself. The answer of when can I start was along the lines of.. "well, you should be phase 2... But you might not be until phase 3 or 4...". What?? This is literally the department that holds my license. If they don't have my answer, then who does?? I'm not afraid of going back to work because of the virus... I'm afraid of going back to work because of all of these GRAY AREAS!! I love my clients. I love my little clinic in my small town. But I will NOT open myself up to lose my license, my career, my families future.

Massage for toe pain?

Posted: 14 May 2020 11:06 PM PDT

Even as I sit here, I can feel a strange numbness in my middle right toe.

I think I broke some toes a few years ago and they've been giving me grief. I wish I could dance all night pain free but alas, my 3rd and 4th toe bones feel misaligned no matter what shoes I wear. Sometimes they hurt so much I can't walk but that's only after a ton of activity. I have tried toe spacers but I haven't noticed any lasting benefits.

Bg info: I'm a healthy 20 year old girl. Only complaints are my crackly joints and TMJ disorder and related jaw pain. I am double jointed and have anxiety which my old massage therapist thought could be related, or maybe it was the cracking joints lol.

I would love lots of advice because I'm sheltering at home and get my exercise by taking long walks.

17 CDC Safety & Sanitation Guidelines for Massage Therapists Considering Re-Opening a Practice

Posted: 15 May 2020 06:42 AM PDT

COVID-19 made massage therapists very aware of the need for increased sanitation protocols. With the lack of a gold standard for massage therapists, we can turn to entities like the CDC to learn how to create a therapy space that is safe and sanitary. While some practices remain closed, some massage businesses are open now. […]

Catching Up with Wella’s North American Education Director, Stephen Moody

Posted: 15 May 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Whether he's travelling to teach in London, Paris, New York or Shanghai, Stephen Moody is always delivering cutting-edge education and endless inspiration to hairstylists.

As the North American education director for Wella Professionals, Moody shared some tips on maximizing business with cuts, colour and trends.

With so many hair trends and styles coming and going, how can hairstylists use them to help build business within the salon?

I think it's a combination of [hairstylists] being comfortable with all the trends and being able to execute them. It's all about knowing the trends and being excited about them. Whether it's a colouring technique or cutting technique, the important thing is the execution. It's like the "triple fringe." I have to practice and practice, do more research, test different ways of doing it, until I was super comfortable with it.

When it comes to consultations, what are some key points to keep in mind?

I think the key to any successful service is the consultation. For me, the beginning and end are everything—allowing time and factoring in the price point, where I'm not doing hair, I'm doing a consultation. The beginning of every single service is the heart of everything. Getting to know what the client wants and what they can have. We, as hairdressers, have to be careful when using the word "yes." For someone that overly uses the word "yes", the challenge with that is you dig yourself into a hole.

How can the haircut help build loyalty with clients?

When you're looking at cutting someone's hair, what you're really doing is you are tailoring the two elements together. From a loyalty standpoint, I think a good hairdresser could tailor the haircut to her neck, her hairline, her face shape, and her hair texture. I can capture the client's loyalty because it's quite unique to her, as I am cutting her hair. I'm doing it for her and not for anybody else, and it's tailored to her face shape and the condition of her hair.

What do you think hairstylists need to pay more attention to?

Education! I think education can come in many different forms. The education that is tried and tested, and that is never really going to change is what we do with Triple Craft, which is basically hands-on education. You can stay home and watch YouTube all day but there's limited information you will get. At the end of the day, we're in a business that's incredibly technical.

I have worked all over the world, but I think the approach that Canadian hairdressers have for education is fantastic! The quality of education here, the commitment to education in Canada, is streets ahead of the counterpart, south of the border. I truly believe that.

With so much online education available, what advice do you have for hairstylists to help them learn more hands-on, technical skills?

I think online education is really great to gather information. It's a great resource for ideas and product knowledge. I think you can often learn a tremendous amount of how products perform. I think any time you're learning a craft, that's when you need to be in a salon, where it needs to be guided or mentored by a colleague or a professional educator. Because the craft part is where you cannot master too much when it's online. It's very limited. I think hairdressers are [realizing] that now, as social media becomes flooded with "education" whereas in fact it's not really education.

What tips do you have for hairstylists on how to promote their business or brand?

Being able to market yourself is very important. Hairstylists have to put themselves out there in the market that they are living in. If "triple fringe" is the new thing, put it on social media. I think another important thing about social media is for them to wear it. From the receptionist to the assistant to the photographs on the walls [of the salon], these are all consistent and reflective of what they are looking to sell. We were at a salon that was very famous for blondes and every single one of their staff was blonde. They mentioned that they wanted to move away from only focusing on blondes; they wanted to start to do some rosé and colours that are away from the classic butter blonde. One of the girls asked me how to do that, and I said "You could start wearing it on your head, especially when people could look and be like "I like that! Could I try that?" It seems to start the conversation. I think it's super important, whether it's a haircut or colour, the hairdresser is the number one billboard!

For hairstylists, what types of content have been working on social media?

People are seeing more and more success with the before-and-after concept, where what you are really getting a sense of is a journey! These photographs are designed to appeal to the hairdresser, and for someone to market themselves. I think by doing that, it's taking them out of the fishbowl. The fishbowl is absolutely crowded with the same images. So, what makes you different to me?

What are some things that hairstylists need to stop or avoid doing?

I think standing still is something that hairdressers should avoid. There is only one thing for sure in our industry, and that is "Tomorrow won't be the same as today." That's a guarantee, so we can't stand still. Another thing is we are not lawyers or surgeons, I think haircutting is fun and exciting. Enjoy it, have fun!

Whether it's online or in person, the one thing that I always try to do is I like to have people that I can connect with. I've got friends all over the world I connect to and get me ideas and inspiration. Sometimes, it just gives me moral support when I'm down. Because it's hard work and you're constantly giving and giving. I truly believe as hairdressers, we're like a battery. We're recharging all the time. At some point, if we're not careful, that battery will go dead or have to be replaced. I just love being around hairdressers and that helps me recharge my battery.
