Breathing For Stress Relief

Posted: 04 May 2020 02:12 PM PDT

Are you feeling overwhelmed? I am grateful to be safe at home with my family, but the anxiety I have felt during this time has left my body yearning for relief. Breathing techniques are key to giving your mind a break from stressors and anxiety. I am going to walk you through a few steps to show you how breathing can ease your stress.

These techniques can be done at home, in your car, at work, practically everywhere. Breathing is something that we all do, but actually being present with your breathing is key to feeling the benefits it can bring your mind.

Breathing Mindfully

My shoulders feel like rocks and can get high-set and some days I wake up with a heavy knot of anxiety below my ribs, center, breathing area. This area is known as the diaphragm. The muscle that expands as we take a deep breath. Anxiety keeps me from feeling focused and grounded. These are the days I am mindful to take deep breaths, move from one task to another while trying to keep my brain still.

Is sounds like such a cliché, to take a deep breath. But a conscience, aware, belly breath resets the nervous system pattern that internally holds tension and stress.

Breathe Like A Baby

Did you know that babies don't breathe from the chest like adults do? A baby’s belly expands forward and big while they breathe. Deep diaphragmatic breaths will expand the entire belly out in front of you – like pregnant belly!

Finding An Aroma

One of my favorite aromas is lavender. It’s a well-know essential oil that will aid in easing your stress. Here are a few of my recommended Aveda products to help you calm yourself at home or on-the-go.

Stress-Relieving Aromas

Whichever aroma appeals to you in a stressful moment is the one that will help balance you. Use the aroma you enjoy! This can be as simple as taking it out for a moment, inhaling a few deep breaths, and going on. You can do it wherever you are.

Breathing Techniques

Once you have found the aroma that works best for your body, you can being to practice these breathing techniques.

Breathing: Step 1 | Quiet Your Mind

When you inhale the aroma of choice, close your eyes. It will help your senses focus on the aroma and not everything around you. Be in that moment, try to push the stressful thoughts out of your brain. Imagine yourself as a stopped car on the side of the highway. Let the thoughts be the other cars still zipping by on the highway.

Breathing: Step 2 | Mudras

Grounding mudras (hand placements) can play a big role in your breath work.

Place your right hand on your right leg, where it falls into place naturally. For me that's on the quadricep muscle, the top front leg. While you take your deep breath in slowly, plug your left nostril with your left hand. Exhale slowly thru right nostril. Next, repeat on the other side.

This might feel a little strange, but the best part of trying it is if you do feel silly; that distraction alone made you forget your anxiety, even if for a minute!

Breathing: Step 3 | Mantras

The final piece that can give your mind a boost is finding a grounding mantra (saying) to say in your head. "Attuned to the Earth's stability, I move confidently along my life journey."

You can find mantras ideas online or create your own personal mantra to give you a sense of peace.

Aroma, breath, mudras and mantras are essential for giving your mind a moment of wellness. Each step you combine will help you feel uplifted, calm and refreshed.

No Heat Styling: Perfect Drip Dry

Posted: 04 May 2020 08:39 AM PDT

There's no better time than now to start practicing a no heat hair routine! I’ll show you which Aveda products to use. There are three main textures to give your hair the perfect heatless style of your dreams.

no heat product guidePro Tips For Styling

Things to keep in mind:

  • Product usage is different on wet hair, you will need to use more than when you do a normal blowout
  • Every head of wavy or curly hair needs 3 products- something healthy, something stiff, and something soft (more on this in a minute)
  • Once you've applied your product, HANDS OFF! You should only be scrunching, fussing, or shaking out hair that is completely wet or completely dry.

No Heat | Prep

Step 1: Wash and condition, ideally with a low foam/sulfate free cleanser and a moisturizing conditioner.

Aveda Favorite

Nutriplenish Light Moisture shampoo and conditioner

Step 2: Squeeze excess moisture out of the hair, trying not to use any friction, just squeeze! An old t-shirt or microfiber towel is nice as long as your hair isn't crazy long or thick.

no heat styling products

No Heat | Styling: Healthy

Step 3: Something HEALTHY- apply anywhere from a dime to a silver dollar amount of a leave in conditioner to treat the hair and detangle.

If using a spray leave in-spray all over, detangle, and spray again to make sure hair is treated from root to ends (this gets rid of frizz)

Aveda Favorites

No Heat | Styling: Stiff

Step 4: Something STIFF- Apply the same amount of a hold product. This could be a volumizing mousse, a gel, or a beach wave spray, it's really up to you! Each one will have a slightly different feel and firmness. Apply the product and work it through all over the hair (not just the ends!!!) Hair should be almost dripping wet.

Aveda Favorites

Step 5: For a softer texture without too much definition, detangle once more and part the hair before letting it air dry completely.

Pro tip: For enhanced, more defined curls or waves put a little more product on your palms, flip your head over and scrunch your wet hair to help it spring up into its natural pattern and sections. Flip back over to organize it and let it air dry completely. (NO MORE TOUCHING until it's dry!!)

No Heat | Finishing: Soft

Step 6: Finish with something SOFT- use a few drops of a hair oil or smoothing serum after the hair is BONE DRY (you can use a diffuser for the last bit if on a time crunch).

Pro tip: Curls or waves should feel slightly stiff, possibly a tad crunchy, and breaking them up with your hands should soften your waves the perfect amount.

Zoya Benefits & Tips

Mary: Neroli Madison Nail Designer & Esthetician

Do you know why Neroli and our nail designers love Zoya? Not only does Zoya have an extensive color selection, but the products also have great benefits for your nail health.

Zoya naked manicure imageZoya Naked Manicure Kit

I love everything about this Zoya kit! It is a must have for at-home nail care. Whether you are taking a break from soft gel or nail enhancements or maybe you want that perfectly clean & healthy look. This is what your nails need. It gives the most professional, well-groomed look, well also maintaining the integrity of your nails with the nourishing effects.

Nutrients in Zoya

Zoya Naked Manicure Base features a nutrient rich formula that helps strengthen the nail by increasing cellular renewal, oxygenation, hydration with a variety of vitamins, proteins, amino acids, and botanicals. All of the nail polish is nontoxic, something I live for.

Benefits in Zoya

10 Free

Free from these harmful and toxic ingredients found in the nail industry: Formedyhyde, Formeldehyde Resin, Dibutyl Phthalate, toluene, camphor, tphp, parabends, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, lead.

Faster Dry-Time

After polish base, 2 coats of color, and top coat are applied, try using the Zoya Fast Dry Drops. This dries your polish completely through the layers and speeds up drying time. Although this product is not instantaneous, it speeds up your drying time incredibly. This is a must have!

Combats Discoloration

If you've got some yellow discoloration, don't worry. The purple perfecter is perfect for you. The cool tone combats that warm toned discoloration to create a healthier natural look.

Zoya naked manicure polish bottlesI Like My Polish Rolled, Not Shaken

Rolling your polish for at least 20 seconds not only helps prevents bubbles, unlike shaking, but also activates the UV Active protective ingredients found in the Zoya Naked ManiSatin Seal Top Coat. Rolling your polish also evenly disperses the ingredients, especially glitter colors to have that even application for any pristine look.

Zoya polish remover awardsZoya’s Award Winning Polish Remover

This is by far the best polish remover I have ever used. It doesn't have the usual chemical smell like most of the store-bought brands. Also, products that have more chemicals may dry out your nail, possibly leading to cracked or weak nails overtime. Zoya's remover, on the other hand, is a gentle cleanse, while also having conditioning effects.

Not only does it have a pretty purple look, it is multi-purpose! There is nothing I love more than being able to appreciate my products having more than one use.

The Zoya remove+ preps the nail by cleaning the plate to get rid of any debris, oil, and old nail polish. Having a clean, oil-free nail plate makes the perfect foundation. It will make it easy for your polish to cling onto that nail to ensure a longer wear. Lastly, what really won me over is the design of cap. It holds in the product and dispenses it in the most efficient and clean way!

Zoya Cares For Our Community

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Zoya is also taking measures to care for the community by producing Hand Sanitizer Gel for those in need.

GWI Wellness Moonshot: Embracing your capacity to adapt can help you live a well life.

Posted: 04 May 2020 08:39 AM PDT

Global Wellness Institute Wellness Moonshot: Adapt

Just when we may have felt on top things, the world changed and we all had to adjust to a new reality.

In addition to the constantly changing landscape of the current pandemic, life can shift in ways we were not anticipating. Sometimes the vicissitudes you encounter personally and professionally call for minor self-adjustments; at other times, your world feels turned upside down.

Fortunately, on the journey of wellness leadership, a saving grace is your unfailing capacity to adapt. Similar to how renowned physicist Stephen Hawking adapted to a serious health issue, our brains, body and psyche have been constantly adapting throughout our lives. This ability to adapt, enabling mind-blowing transformations such as a caterpillar to a moth, is inherent to every being, including you. Trust it. Embracing your capacity to adapt can serve you as you navigate how to fully live and lead wellness.

What Does It Mean to Be Adaptable?

Being adaptable means accepting and effectively adjusting to shifting circumstances and demands. Experts in Traditional Chinese Medicine, India's healthcare model Ayurveda, and Western medicine go so far as to say that being adaptable is the very definition of health, and it plays out physiologically, individually, interpersonally and societally. This enlightening view reminds us that when we learn to interact with our world with flexibility and harmony, we inherently grow wellbeing.

Adaptability Allows Us to Thrive

Psychologist Guy Winch says, "Our ability to have life satisfaction, to be happy [and] to have good relationships really depends on our ability to adapt." Mentally and emotionally, being adaptable helps you buffer stress, deal with life's traumas and challenges with greater resilience, and directs your inner resources toward a healthy, fulfilling life. Physically, being adaptable is as vital to the movements you make every day as it is to your ability to respond to surprise.

In the workplace, adaptability is key to career success. Adaptable people are better equipped to handle change, juggle multiple demands, respond to new situations creatively, and work with a variety of people and approaches to achieve results. In addition, entire organizations and communities must be adaptable to remain innovative, relevant and resilient.

So, the question is: How does your ability to adapt help you as a wellness leader?

Put Adaptability Into Practice

When you are more adaptable, you naturally influence others to be adaptable, too. Bring adaptability to the forefront of your wellness leadership by experimenting with these seven strategies.

1. Trust how you are already adaptable and resilient.

Make a list of three past challenges you successfully navigated and how. You will discover that you succeeded in part due to your ability to recover from setbacks and adapt to change. It's important to honor your ability to adapt—and mentor adaptability in others by sharing your wisdom.

2. Set yourself up to flex.

If you are rigid and stressed in your inner world, that's likely how you'll be perceived by your outer world. Commit to daily habits that help you function from a foundation of expansiveness and wellbeing. For instance, eating well, moving your body, getting sufficient sleep, adopting a growth mindset, and seeking moments of gratitude are habits that increase your adaptability.

3. Meet reactivity with breath.

Your meeting with a partner is spiraling downward. Your stomach, jaw and thinking have tensed—you are bracing, mind and body, to defend your views. How can you nudge your stress toward greater openness and adapt to the situation? Take a conscious breath. It is true for us all: As our reactivity rises, our adaptability erodes. Yet, we have the power to shift our state of being. Enhance conversations at work and home by sharing these breathing practices with others.

4. Ask, "What else could be true?"

Update your perspectives about a challenge by seeking opinions that differ from your own. Listen to podcasts or read news reports that shake up your views and talk to people who may disagree with you. What new questions or insights do you now have about the issue that you otherwise would have missed? Build adaptable thinking as a muscle in your family or team by inviting them to do this activity, too.

5. Turn letdown into learning.

On a daily basis, things occur that you don't expect. Maybe someone fails to keep a commitment—or you do. Instead of resisting or judging what happened, explore what there is to learn. This isn't about merely reframing the situation with a positive spin; it is about relating to it from a foundation of wholeness, learning and wellbeing.

6. Take another route to and from work, church or school.

If you usually drive, take the bus, carpool, ride your bike, or walk. Explore a path you've never taken before. What new ideas or energy are stimulated by your new surroundings? Involve others to make this a mind-expanding and bonding experience.

7. Love your wellness moonshot—yet let go of the "how."

Keep an eye on your wellness vision and goals, but don't get too attached to how to achieve them. Willpower is one strategy; allowing things to simply unfold is equally potent. What opportunities appear effortlessly when you're willing to be adaptable?

The Journey of Living Is the Journey of Adapting

This month, we encourage you to celebrate your commitment to creating wellbeing in every aspect of your own life, as well as in your family, workplace, school or community. Post your story (and even a photo) about how you are making adaptability part of your personal or shared wellness journey with #wellnessmoonshot. We'll spread your inspiration to the growing network of wellness leaders worldwide.

Think of each month's Wellness Moonshot as a guide or "lesson plan" to empower wellness. Plus, invite others to join in The Wellness Moonshot! Our next step in this wellness leadership journey highlights how cultivating energy can help you lead wellness at work, at home, and in your community.

Dietary Supplements: Where To Buy What You Need

Posted: 04 May 2020 06:55 AM PDT

Written By Paisley Hansen / Reviewed By Ray Spotts

Are you wondering how to stay as healthy, vital and fit as possible? No matter what your specific concerns may be, there are dietary supplements designed to help. There are no magic pills; exercising and eating right are crucial. Still, supplements can play a big part in helping you feel your best.

The first step is determining what you want. For digestive support, look for prebiotics and probiotics. To boost your immune system, turn to antioxidants and multivitamins. For more energy, concentrate on vitamin B12, iron and caffeine. To help you get a better night's sleep, try melatonin or valerian root. Many supplements contain more than one effective ingredient, and you may need to experiment before you discover the combination that works best for you.

Check For Purity

If what you buy is not a high-quality product, it won't do much good. The Food and Drug Administration regulates dietary supplements, requiring evidence that they are safe for human consumption. However, much of the responsibility for purity and strength lies with the manufacturer. Be sure the supplements you select are made in conjunction with the FDA's Good Manufacturing Practices, to ensure they are properly packaged, free of contaminants and accurately labeled.

Buy Direct

If the supplement brands you prefer have their own website, purchase products directly from them. For example, if you find bio complete 3 on Amazon, it will likely not be the freshest, most potent version of the product. It may not be the authentic product at all. Distributors sometimes get their hands on products close to - or past - their expiration date, or they may be obtaining counterfeits without realizing it. Avoid the issue by buying directly from the manufacturer whenever possible. Some manufacturers do not retail their own products; in that case, their website should direct you to authorized distributors. Never buy used products or open containers on auction sites.

Consult Your Physician

As with many health matters, the best place to start is with your physician. Your doctor knows your unique health history and can address your concerns better than anyone else. Asking for a professional opinion is especially important if you have certain conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should discuss supplements with an obstetrician or pediatrician before starting a regimen.

Consult with your pharmacist or doctor if you are taking any medications, as supplements may interact with them. For example, several substances can thin the blood, including some prescription medications, vitamin E and ginkgo biloba. Taking too many of them can multiply their effects and lead to excessive bleeding, externally or internally. In other instances, a natural supplement may render a prescription drug less effective.

Conduct Your Own Research

Augment your conversations with your doctor by conducting a fair amount of research on your own. Online articles can be informative, but examine them carefully. The information should come from a reliable source. Many government agencies, research organizations, universities and respected medical establishments publish pieces on their own websites. Other sites may have trustworthy information, if articles are written by medical professionals or if they reference dependable sources. Studies are constantly uncovering new information, so seek out current data. Beware of blatant advertisements and claims that are too good to be true.

Check In With Yourself

After taking a supplement for a short time, ask yourself how you feel. Are you experiencing the benefits you anticipated? Do you feel worse than you did prior to taking it? Are there any side effects that you did not expect, either good or bad? Not all products show noticeable results right away, so be sure to allow the proper time period before evaluating their efficacy. However, if you are on your second or third re-order and you still don't notice a difference, it may be time to try a different product. If you experience severe side effects, see your doctor immediately.
