ColourCode Challenge – Supporting UK Stylists

Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:04 AM PDT

Covid19 is having a hugely detrimental effect on one of the UK's biggest industries. We can all work together to support this amazing sector, and help so many people in the process.

The professional salon industry's contribution to the U.K. GDP is a staggering 7 Billion pounds per year, an industry that Houses over 41,000 businesses and employs close to 290,000 people right here in the U.K.

We've personally been involved with this magical sector for over 40 years and have seen the truly amazing impact stylists/beauticians have on our lives. The salon is not just somewhere to get our haircut or nails done, it's where we have built relationships, made friends, have laughed and in some cases cried with joy, it's a place of comfort where we can talk openly, where a friendly ear is there to listen.

Salons can be a place we can go to feeling our lowest and emerge feeling a million pounds.

Stylists and Beauticians are woven into the fabric of our lives, sharing our biggest moments; from creating your wedding hair, through to special celebrations, milestone birthdays and your children’s first haircut.

Let's show our appreciation by supporting the friends and family we have made in salons throughout the U.K.

Together we can make a difference.

THE #COLOURCODECHALLENGE

#COLOURCODECHALLENGE will do just that, supported by all of the leading UK salon publications.

You don’t have to do the challenge in order to donate, but it’s a fun way to create a feeling of real togetherness whilst we all work towards a cause, a way to visually show your support and a vehicle to spread the word to others to do the same.

You can upload your #colourcodechallenge to TikTok, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, just don’t forget to use the hashtag to become part of the movement.

WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE? HOW DO I DO IT?

What you need:

1. A pack of thin glow sticks which you can easily find online. We’ve used a brand called Swibby Stix, but similar will be fine.

2. Dark or black clothing. Works best if you cover as much of your body as possible, but it’s not essential to having fun.

3. Clear Cellotape. This is to attach the glow sticks to your clothing, whilst allowing the glow stick to still shine through. Be generous when attaching the sticks as you will be dancing, but please be careful and sensible during this stage.

4. A dark room. Your living room or kitchen will do. Best done at night with all blinds and curtains closed, turn off any ambient light, such as TV, lamps etc. Ensure you have a fully clear floor space available with no obstacles to avoid any potential accidents as it will be dark and you will be dancing.

5. A smart phone or tablet. Best used with a tripod, but you could get a friend or family member to help you, which is often more fun.

6. Tequila by Jax Jones
is the selected song for the challenge. This is already available as a 30 second sample on TikTok. (Be aware that there a two different sample versions available)

7. Have a laugh – most important!

You can watch an example video of the #colourcodechallenge to learn the moves via @advancedprosalon on TikTok.

Dance moves breakdown

1.
Start off looking down to the ground
2. look up and then shrug your shoulders
3. Both arms straight up in the air on “one shot” lyric
4. Both arms fully extended out to the sides inline with your shoulders on “two shot” lyric.
5. Bring your left hand down to your left hip on “three shot” lyric
6. Bring your right hand down to your right hip on the “four shot” lyric
7. Wiggle your hips in a circular motion whilst progressively squatting downwards to the music.
8. Look right and bring your left hand up to your left ear on the “hola” lyric and pause.
9. Keeping your left hand to your left ear, extend your right arm out to your right inline with your shoulder whilst returning your body to a fully upright position from the squat. Then bounce your right arm to the beat across to the centre position to point straight infant of you.
10. Freestyle dance however you choose toward the camera until to song is complete!

Congratulations you’ve just completed the #colourcodechallenge !!

HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED

All funds raised will go into supporting salons and stylists across the UK to support with essential running costs and to get the business back on its feet, helping that business to survive these challenging times.

Many of us are seriously missing our stylists and hairdressers, so let's make sure they are all still there when we need them.

Bridal Trial 101: Picture Perfect Day

Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:38 AM PDT

Congratulations! You're engaged and your wedding plans are in full swing. You've got your dress, booked your caterer, venue and photographer. All of the stressful pieces are taken care- now we can get to the fun stuff! It's time to take all the dreams you've had since you were little and make them a reality. That's where I come in. Going into the salon for your bridal hair trial can, no doubt, be a mixture of excitement and intimidation, but I'm here to rest your mind.

Scheduling Your Bridal Trial

This appointment should be stress-free and relaxing, as the count down to the big day draws near. By the time you're in my chair discussing looks for the dayof, we should be no more than a month out- maybe two, from the actual date. You want to make sure that your trial appointment date allows for more time if a second appointment is necessary. This may be because you've changed your mind about your preliminary style after your first trial, so make sure you've left enough time to be comfortable and confident with your selected hair designer, and style. Booking this appointment too far out leaves too much room for second guessing yourself, and for becoming overwhelmed with too many options. It's also better to wait until the day-of is closer because you'll definitely know by then the vibe and aesthetic of your wedding.

What To Bring: Bridal Accessories

Should I bring anything, you ask? Yes! The most important thing to come prepared with is pictures. Pictures, pictures, pictures. You know yourself best, and what images your eyes and heart are drawn to most. Bring images of styles you adore, realistic or not. Bring images of styles that have elements that you like, even if the over-all picture isn't your favorite. And bring images of styles that you don't like. It's important for me to incorporate as many of the "loves" as I can, but sometimes it's even more important for me to know what you don't love.

If you can't find any photos of an entire look that you love, don't fret! It's totally fine for me to piece together your own, custom, style from the puzzle pieces of different images. Have you spent long hours lurking through Etsy for Bridal accessories (clips, combs, decorative jewels, etc)? Bring 'em with! If you forget them, or they're still in mail, have no fear. Your stylist can definitely figure out where to place a veil or a few decorative barrettes on the day-of, no sweat. The only time I would really want your accessories on hand is if it needs to be woven into the hair. Those would be things like rhinestone/pearl vine, or a ribbon headpiece. These need to be strategically placed within the style, so it's important they're incorporated at your trial.

Hair Extensions

Let's talk extensions. No, don't be scared (or, yes, get excited)! There are a lot of stunning images on Pinterest. Many of which have mounds and layers of curls. Many of which you will want, and I want to give you. Most people DO NOT have that much hair- trust me, most of it's fake. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.

Adding extensions into the hair for your wedding can truly elevate your style, and make a lot of styles far more achievable. Bringing in images with long, flowing locks? If it’s not your natural texture or density, extensions are a must. Clip-ins are just fine! You don't need to make a large investment in tape-in/permanent extensions. Although, if you would like wearing extensions on a regular basis, I can help you with that!

If, at your trial, you don't know you'll need extensions, but your stylist says you do in order to achieve your desired look, that's totally fine! We will go ahead and re-create the image you've chosen without them and discuss how the finished look will be different on the day-of. You can always book a second trial once you've purchased your extensions, if that makes you more comfortable.

Finding Inspiration

If you're really lost on what design would best fit your wedding, or what designs would work best with your hair type and face shape, I'm here to help. Bring pictures of images you're attracted to anyway, and we'll have an indepth discussion about the vibe of your wedding to find the answer.

I'll ask you questions about your theme, colors, dress style, guest count, flowers, and venue. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to help you achieve the look that would be most appropriate for the feel and aesthetic of your wedding. Is it black tie? Bohemian? Romantic? Rustic? It's my job to help you feel and look as beautiful as you've dreamed of, and we'll find the solutions together.

Getting Prepped

There is one final, very important piece of your wedding hair style to consider: length and color of your hair. Let it be known- YES, your hair CAN be too long for an updo. Many brides will have spent a year or more growing their hair for their wedding day, and in most ways, that is very helpful for me. In some rare cases, though, I recommend a haircut. It could turn out that the style you love is only achievable if I cut off a few inches (or more). Extremely long hair has the great potential to be too heavy for a desired look, or it may simply need layering to give dimension and movement to your curls.

Dimension & Color

Speaking of movement and dimension- what about your color? Most, if not all hair in pictures you will find on various websites, has dimension. It might be balayage, highlights, or lowlights. Solid color will not offer the same effect as a mixture of lightness and darkness. Dimension will "highlight" (ha- see what I did there?) the distinct curves, bends and braids of your chosen style. Solid color will absorb light, making the design look washed out, and not as intricate as it potentially could.

New To Color?

If you've never colored before, again, have no fear. There are many color options to choose from within the spectrum of color itself, to different formulations of color (permanent, demi-permanent, high lift, etc) and ways to apply it. It doesn't have to be damaging, permanent or high maintenance.

Your bridal trial should be a day you look forward to, not one that you dread. Going into a salon can definitely be intimidating, but hopefully with these tools you'll be able to walk in confidently, with a clear understanding of what to expect. Preparation is key to a relaxed, collaborative experience. I look forward to starting your bridal journey with you!

Relax With A Peaceful Pause

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 06:00 AM PDT

We invite you to take a moment to look closely at these Spring flowers—the details, the color, the vibrancy. Then notice, at the same time, what you perceive in your body as you are being touched by this beauty. Is there a small movement inside you that helps you expand and relate differently to yourself? As you resume what you were doing, what shift do you notice in your perception?

If all the working, shopping, parenting and partnering, cooking, and living you do leave you feeling depleted and stressed, take heart. There are many little ways to create moments of calm in your stressful life. One is a peaceful pause. These are the brief but restorative times when you stop thinking about your have-to list and focus instead on the things that lift your spirits and nourish your soul. There is beauty everywhere, and especially in Springtime when the earth is bursting with renewal. Pause, take a few deep breaths, and take it in!

COVID-19: Reduce Stress and Minimize Anxiety with These At-Home Therapeutic Techniques

Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:11 AM PDT

by Seth Johnson
As you know, the COVID-19 epidemic has left many people – and businesses – without proper
support. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an article
that highlighted some very real concerns for people across the world:

  • General fear and worry about their own health and those of loved ones
  • Changes in eating and sleeping patterns due to the quarantine and stay-at-home order
          placed into effect
  • Troubles with sleeping and concentrating
  • Worsening of chronic health problems
  • Increased substance use concerns
  • And more

We’re in unprecedented times, and it’s critical for us to do what we can to minimize damages
of the mind, body and spirit while we all try to navigate the twists and turns of this pandemic.
By staying proactive and creating a daily routine filled with a few tried-and-true therapeutic
techniques, you’ll be ensuring that your health and well-being continue to remain at the
forefront of your life – which will only aid you in these times of uncertainty.

DIY Therapeutic Techniques

Progressive relaxation – this type of meditative exercise could be a great way to wind down at
the end of each day. As you’re lying down in bed comfortably, close your eyes and begin with
your feet. Tighten your toes – and relax. Then, tighten your calves – and relax. Progressive
relaxation involves working your way up through your body, tightening and relaxing so that the
mind will follow the body in letting go of stress and anxiety.

Calming essential oils – if you have some doTerra essential oils at home, be sure to put small
droplets at the crown of your head, behind your ears, on your neck, and/or on your temples
throughout the day. You could even put a few drops in your pillow for a good night’s rest;
lavender, ylang-ylang, rose and chamomile are some excellent options for stress-relief during
this time.

Frequent stretching – be sure to get some movement in each day, and engage in several
different types of stretches so that your body can remain prepped and supported. To start, you
could do an upper back stretch: Stand with your knees slightly bent, and clasp your hands in
front of you with your arms parallel to the floor. Relax your head and round out your upper
back, pushing your hands forward and moving your palms away from your body. Hold it for 20-
30 seconds while you take breaths in and out; repeat 2-3 more times as needed.

Taking Care of Your Health: A Top Priority

Ultimately, the unpredictability surrounding COVID-19 can either make or break us – and as a
community, we can come together to ensure that we’re all taking appropriate steps towards
maintaining our own health and wellness. The fear, negativity and stress surrounding this
situation can make it all too easy to place our well-being on the back burner – but now is when
we need to pay extra special attention to ourselves and those we love so that we can continue
to thrive. Please feel free to share these strategies with those around you, and remember to
find small, meaningful ways to make the most of each day.

Bodies in Balance is an exceptional massage therapy practice based in Flagstaff, AZ,
that aims to help clients relieve pain, improve athletic performance, and reduce stress
with high-quality therapeutic bodywork and outstanding customer service. Due to the
COVID-19 epidemic, Bodies in Balance will remain closed until further notice. If you
have any questions or concerns, please call us today at 928-853-5765 or email
bodiesinbalanceflagstaff@gmail.com. We truly cannot wait to continue providing you
with services that uplift your mind, body and spirit to new heights.

Five great ways to enhance your self-care while hot tubbing

Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:54 PM PDT

April 28, 2020 – How are you doing? I don't know about you, but the days are blending together, and I can't believe April is nearly over!

One thing that has become incredibly evident during the past six weeks: everyone is figuring out how much a hot tub can change their lives! It's a wonderful thing to be able to help people who are realizing this finally get a hot tub at home for that valuable self-care. It's more important than ever right now.

If you have a hot tub or are new to hot tubbing, here are five simple ways you can enhance your soak and get even more benefit from your hot water retreat. Try one or all of them. I guarantee you'll feel even better when you emerge from your tub.

  • Add aromatherapy. Good clean aromatherapy does wonders for you, and it's really a gift when you soak. We remain big fans of Spazazz Aromatherapy at Olympic. It's easy to use, won't screw up your water care, and will filter out in a couple of days. A couple capfuls will be perfect for a soak. We've got a terrific array of scents on our E-Store. I especially like the Rx Series. Each is formulated to address a specific health need: Detox, Muscle, Joint & Sport. Try a couple of them. You'll love it!
  • Consider meditation. Hot tubbing helps your mind and body relax in ways nothing else replicates. It stands to reason that taking advantage of that warm escape would be of great benefit for meditation. Mediation reduces stress (might be a little important right now!), boosts your immune system (definitely important right now!), and absolutely helps with heart health.
  • Try hot tub yoga. If you're a yoga lover, there are several poses that lend themselves to hot tub yoga. I previously wrote about yoga in your hot tub, including some info on each of the three poses: the Cobra, the Stork and the Cross-Legged Twist. The hot water will enable you to relax and be as limber as ever to capitalize on these positions and elevate your time in the tub.
  • Add a little music. The physiological response of the body in hot water is well-documented. So is the physiological response of music on our bodies. Combine the two, and you'll feel like you've reached wellness nirvana. If you have a Hot Spring Spa with a Bluetooth Music System, you're already set up to enjoy music from your smartphone or other Bluetooth enabled device. I've been a singer for most of my life. I know how much singing gladdens my heart. Listening to music while taking in a soak will definitely make you feel better.
  • Take in nature. I've talked about the benefits of hot tubbing many times over the years. One benefit that always seems to rise to the top for many customers after they buy a tub from us is a new appreciation for nature. And, with what's been going on these days, getting outside in a hot tub is not only safe, it also gives you a chance to appreciate our world. I remember stories from customers about hearing peeper frogs for the first time, seeing Orcas in Puget Sound, birds chirping in the new morn or evening dusk, and shooting star sightings. The heavens provide a fabulous vista when you soak. Take the time to look up.

There are so many terrific reasons that a hot tub is good for you. We're thrilled to see so many people inquiring about a Hot Spring Spa for their home during this crazy time we're all navigating. Regardless of what you may encounter as we forge our way through, I promise you a hot tub will make it all feel much better. And you will feel much better.

Stay safe and healthy.
