Are Hand Sanitizers Safe & Effective?

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 07:25 PM PDT

The most asked question these days "Are hand sanitizers effective?"

The simple answer is, soap and water are still more effective at removing certain kinds of germs from your hands. For various reasons, you might not have access to soap and water and it is in those circumstances, hand sanitizer is incredibly useful for helping to disinfect and prevent illness.

Hand sanitizer is recommended by the CDC and WHO as the next best thing if you are unable to wash your hands with soap and water. In the event of a shortage, it is good practice to know how to make your own sanitizer using safe household ingredients.

For more information from the CDC.

We have heard that alcohol is a skin care ingredient to avoid. But often it comes to fighting bacteria and germs, alcohol based had sanitizer are a lot more effective than ones that use essential oils or witch hazel as their sanitizing ingredient. We do have to take into consideration not all hand sanitizers are equal. Homemade and named brands use different ingredients and measurements for their formulation.

Alcohol comes in different varieties. Rubbing alcohol, also known as isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol. It is a cheap ingredient and readily available. We have all heard of Ethanol or ethyl alcohol. Another option is high proof grain alcohol such as Everclear.

If you prefer to avoid rubbing alcohol another option is high proof vodka or hydrogen peroxide. If using hydrogen peroxide, it needs to be stored in an opaque bottle to protect it from light. You also have the option of adding essential oils to your recipe. The alcohol or hydrogen peroxide are already effective sanitizers on their own so the essential oils are not actually required for disinfecting. However, they do have antibacterial properties and will leave behind a fresh scent.

Note:

  • Vinegar is often a common ingredient in homemade cleaning sprays. However, vinegar is not an effective broad spectrum disinfectant, so it should not be used in place of powerful disinfectants such as alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or bleach.
  • Witch hazel is not a substitute for alcohol. The strongest extract is only 14% alcohol.

Here are some things to consider when choosing the type of alcohol you use for your hand sanitizer.

Prolonged exposure to rubbing alcohol can cause headaches, vomiting, nausea and migraines for some people. If a loved ones has these symptoms, it is best to avoid rubbing alcohol. It may also cause redness, rashes and/or extreme dryness and cracking of the skin. Just to clarify, small amounts are generally fine for most people, however during these unprecedented times we find ourselves reaching for the hand sanitizers quit often.

Some say we can't use vodka to make homemade hand sanitizer, however if you find high proof vodka with at least 60% alcohol, it is safe to use. Vodka contains pure ethyl alcohol or ethanol rather than isopropyl alcohol. Pure ethanol is not toxic to skin and doesn't have to be used in a well-ventilated area.

Below are some brands of high proof vodka:

  • Spirytus Rektyfikowany (192 Proof)

Vodka: 96% Alcohol By Volume (strongest bottle of liquor sold in the world)

  • Everclear (190 Proof)

Liquor: 95% ABV liquor (made in the United States)

  • Pincer Vodka

         Vodka: 88.8% ABV

  • Balkan Vodka (176 Proof)

         Vodka: 88% ABV

  • Good ol'Sailor Vodka (170 Proof)

         Vodka: 85% ABV

  • Devil Springs Vodka (160 Proof)

         Vodka: 80% ABV

  • Bacardi 151 (151 Proof)

         Rum: 75.5% ABV

Please note, you have other options available to you depending on where you live. But kind in mind, most vodkas are typically only 40% alcohol and will not be effective for disinfecting.

You can add a few drops of an antibacterial essential oils for frangrance, such as eucalyptus, tea tree or cinnamon, make it a fresher scent. Yu may also want to add a humectant to moisturize your skin and keep your hands from drying. A good example would be vegetable glycerin which you can use to make a spray hand sanitizer or aloe vera for a gel form.

Our end thoughts, there are tons of DIY Homemade Hand Sanitizer recipes out there. We are giving you tips on how to make sure you are choosing the best, safest and effective hand sanitizer you can.

We hope this information was helpful and gives you a better understanding of choosing the best ingredients for your DIY Hand Sanitizer or even what to look for when purchasing a brand name.

Until next time keep safe and stay healthy

Staying Active During Quarantine

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 12:15 PM PDT

Keeping your body and mind active and engaged is important for your mental health. I'm here to share some tips and ideas that work for me. Hopefully this gives you a boost of inspiration!

Changing Routines

I don't know about you, but I have found it challenging to be motivated through quarantine. Things are different; we don't have access to our gyms, we aren’t able attend the classes we love and we also can't meet with friends for a beautiful hike (Lapham Peak is my favorite) on a warm morning.

Typically, I have a pretty solid routine… well as much of a routine as I could have with a puppy and a 15 year old at home!

Because of the quarantine and social distancing, I had to push myself to be active. I'm here to share some tips and ideas that have worked for me just in case you need a little inspiration like I did!

Finding Inspiration

Pinterest

If you want to work your arms, they have ideas. Legs? They've got your back! Whether you want a light and easy yoga routine or to train for your first 5k, it’s all there for you.

No weights? No problem!

You can find multiple items in your house that could work. Here’s 3 options to try!

Don’t forget! You can always use your body as a weight, too.

Local gyms and trainers

There are tons of trainers and gyms offering options for free classes via social media. Search your favorite gym and see what they have. Here are some of my favorites to give you some ideas: Shred415, Les Mills, Orange Theory.

Dog walking

Lastly, we’ve come to a really good mood-booster!

I’ve walked my dog Luna 1.5-4 miles per day, depending on the weather. It's good for her AND me! I love to get outside in the fresh air and listen to my favorite jams or a new book on Audible

If you don't have a dog, maybe an elderly neighbor or you know someone in the healthcare field has one you could help with. Not only would you be getting outside for a refreshing walk, but you’d be doing a small act of kindness as well, and that goes a long way!

Even if you're getting outside on your own, that's ok! Throw those earbuds in and pump up the music or be with nature and use it as a time to reflect.

Staying Connected

Sometimes I feel very motivated and sometimes I do not. When I need a little extra push I have found that talking to a friend about it can help. Taking a scroll through social media to see what everyone else is doing always creates inspiration and motivation for me!

As Rachel Hollis mentions regularly- sometimes all you need to do is a countdown to get going. It's as easy as counting down to yourself "5, 4, 3, 2, 1… GO!" Get up and jump around! Change your body language and get moving. Jog in place, do a few jumping jacks or dance out some of your best moves.

Whatever you do, just get up and start getting the energy going. Maybe you'll dance with the kiddos while listening to Disney tunes or maybe you'll decide to start training for your first 5k.

I hope this has given you a few ideas for how to keep staying motivated! Remember: no matter what you decided to do, getting your heart rate up and moving your body is so good and refreshing for the mind, body and soul.

I can't wait to see you back in the salon and I welcome any inspiration you have! I'd also love to hear your comments on what has been working for you.

We're all in this together! 💗

Not Everyone Is Safe At Home – Helping Our Community

Posted: 15 Apr 2020 10:39 AM PDT

At Neroli, the community is always our top priority. When the Covid-19 pandemic became a reality here in Milwaukee, we knew that there would be a profound impact for many, making  basic necessities like putting food on the table a challenge. So we launched the Show We Care campaign to raise funds for those in need. We are proud to announce that with your help, the first phase of our campaign  raised $3,000 for  Hunger Task Force in the month of April.  We now hope to continue making a difference in our community by bringing awareness and raising funds in the second phase of our campaign for Sojourner Family Peace Center.

Those dealing with domestic violence aren’t “safer at home.”

Over the past few years we have supported Sojourner Family Peace Center  by providing hair and makeup services for their Be the Light fashion show, and were excited to support again this year. Sadly due to the current health crisis, the 2020 fashion show has been postponed until June of 2021–but the need for the services Sojourner provides doesn’t stop. Those dealing with domestic violence aren’t “safer at home” and need our help now more than ever– domestic violence spikes during times of stress and economic hardship

Salons and barbershops to stay closed for another three weeks

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 04:29 AM PDT

The government has announced that the current lockdown will continue for at least three more weeks.

Before restrictions can be lifted, the government wants to see a clear and steady drop in death rates and the rate of new infections slowing down. Right now, there little evidence to show that the spread of the virus is well and truly under control, and lifting lockdown too early runs the risk of the virus continuing to spread, and would cause more long term damage to both public health and the economy.

A recent NHBF Member survey suggests that most (95%) are expecting to re-open their hair salons, barbershops or beauty salons once the lockdown is lifted.  But the longer the lockdown continues, the harder it will be to survive. Many salons and barbershops are now dependent on government grants or loans, but said they could not survive for more than two months, even if the money comes through.

Ian Egerton, NHBF president said, "Despite the economic pressures, the extended lockdown shows that it isn't safe for UK salons and barbershops to re-open in the immediate future.  The world has changed and things won't simply go back to how they were. Many people – employees and clients – will be nervous about catching or spreading the virus even when the lockdown is lifted. My salon is in a busy area of London and I think it will be a long time before people will feel comfortable mixing with others in the workplace or on public transport.  It is impossible to avoid physical contact in salons and it's hard to see how social distancing can be maintained.  These were the reasons why we urged the government to order salons to shutdown, even though initially they didn't impose any restrictions."

Hilary Hall, NHBF chief executive added, "We believe that extending the current lockdown is the right thing to do until the coronavirus is under control.  In the meantime, we're urging the government to work with us on a plan to lift restrictions. It must be clear which businesses can re-open, when they can re-open and what restrictions will apply. Many salons and barbershops will be worried about staff and client safety so it's vital that they get clear guidance on issues like how social distancing will work in practice for salons and barbershops, what personal protective equipment must be worn – not only by the people working in salons and barbershops, but also by clients.  The government must continue its commitment to supporting businesses which have to remain closed to protect public safety."
